Roll back the rock

I don't know what all the furor is about. I mean, James Cameron produces a movie about Mr. & Mrs. Christ and their son, Judah that asserts Jesus and Mary Magdalene were hitched, with a kid, and buried in a conventional tomb, and the religious right gets bent out of shape.

They would really have had a fit over what my old friend, Joe O' use to do when he was in seminary. Joe, who was a Jesuit Priest, would get drunk with his fellow seminarians and they would have a "roll back the rock" party at Easter. Wish I'd have been there to see THAT!

Anyone who takes themselves or the universe or religion too seriously, is so sane they are insane! I belong to the "could be or not" crowd. It is reasonably good theater, isn't it, just watching these people foam at the mouth. Very much the drama queens, I'd say.

I don't see how this find threatens Christianity. Really. So Jesus was married and had a family? What he had to say was beautiful and profound. That's what Christianity should really be about - not how his body might have fared after death. Jesus, Buddha - there are sometimes people who really do seem to be hooked into god. That's why people followed them in the first place.

These days all Christianity seems to be about is hatred and exclusion. Were Jerry Falwell’s and Rush Limbaugh around 2000 years ago - they would have voted with Herod to crucify Christ. And they do it today just the same without breaking a sweat. They are the very same people Christ drove out of the Temple - and for some insane reason they cannot see it.

Hey Jude-ay-Jude-ay-Jude-ay-Jude!
Whaaoh!

Ah, now where were we? This is the same shit-fit that followed the Da Vinci Code, isn't it? It's as if we are not to be creative with certain ideas, just swallow them whole, alas.

I detest censorship.

You no like, you no go.

Another interesting post, Jood.

Hmmm, if it weren't for the fact this guy was your friend, I'd speculate as to exactly what "roll back the rock" might be code for...

Well... I watched the documentary and enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of the science was crap, especially the statistical analysis, but much of it was good solid archaeological forensics.

Is it the Holy Family? Hell if I know, but definitely food for thought.

I am not that big on folk lore or mythology and thus these new Jesus speculations fly by me like bats in the night. It's astonishing how great importance religion has in the American every day life, from the Appalachian huts to that white mansion in the D.C.. Can't figure you, Yanks, out!

My brother is a Lutheran minister. He didn't get that way from being from a not-very-religious family. Consider those my "creds".

The concept of Jesus' divinity is the basis of the Christian religion. If Jesus did NOT rise from the dead on "the third day" and ascend into heaven, then his status as "The Son of God" and a co-equal in the Trinity is null and void and, as Martin Luther pointed out (back in the middle ages, not the black preacher from the south who got murdered) "If you do not believe the entire Bible is the Inspired (God-Breathed) Word of God, then you cannot believe ANY of it is" (paraphrased).

Without the miracle of the Resurrection, the entire basis for Christianity is destroyed. Jesus becomes just "another prophet" like Mohammed. Holy Communion becomes just a travesty of the pagan ritual of "wine and cakes". Baptism becomes meaningless. The entire religion becomes a farce.

Considering my brother's income depends on folks believing in the Divinity of Jesus, I can easily see why the Christian religious community is in an uproar over this.

Jesus as "Just another guy with a really good idea" just doesn't wash as well as "Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace."

Well, as a Catholic who in fact named BabyGirl after my absolute all-time favorite saint Mary Magdalene and my own dearly departed great grandmother (who just so happened to be named Mary Magdalene) I couldn't be happier to see some positive light shed upon the very slighted MM. And if the Cameron info is correct and Jesus was able to enjoy and embrace Earthly love, passion, and the joys of being a spouse and parent then more power to Him. I know that nothing on Earth has given me more love, passion, and joy than being a wife to Hubby and a mother to BabyGirl. I'd like to think that a prophet who preached such beauty and love was able to truly experience such beauty and love.

yes tina- but you are a minority here. i didn't watch the actual show but i caught the end- where ted koppel 'interviews' the players and their critics. according to simcha's stats- there is a 1 in 600 chance it is THE jesus. christianity in this country anyway would collapse because the evangelicals- and probably other denominations believe in a whole body resurrection. convenient since the early church didn't have the bones. i don't see what the flap is all about anyway. if you can suspend disbelief and believe the tale of the supernatural being that came to life and then resurrected- this shouldn't faze you in the slightest. but then again- i'm a heathen so what do i know?

I find it hypocritical that the church could denouce this as quickly as they did

Where the heck have I been? I know nothing of this.

Well, Sewmouse, it's sad that the best ideas to come along about how we should treat one another aren't enough by themselves. We have to gobble down a virgin birth and a trinity and all sorts of other foolishness, including Paul's sexual hang-ups.

This isn't about preserving jobs in the religion industry. It's about the creative, rigorous pursuit of truth.

The teachings of Jesus are world-shaking wisdom even without all the foldirol.

He's still my guy. The church is something else. Way else.

Was this the origin of rock & roll (roll back the rock parties?)....just adding to the deliciously irreverant thread. Miss you Jood!

Lulu - please do understand, I don't disagree with you about good ideas not being enough.

I don't trust anything in the Bible, because it's been so extensively "edited" by the Catholic Church, and original documents are not available for anyone to examine and translate (if not destroyed, most likely hidden in the Vatican archives).

Therefore, I don't accept or reject-out-of-hand the concept of a divine presence on earth, however I do reject the apostolic "conversion" of Saul of Tarsus, and reject all of his "teachings". Right there I'm in flagrant violation of the "all or nothing" concept of Martin Luther - 10 yard penalty.

The "politics" of Xtianity are the major reason I have renounced the religion wholesale.

Thanks for the clarification, Sewmouse.

I really love Jesus, though. It's the church I can't stand. Anyone who looked into the eyes of the disenfranchised and unrespectable and said "You count" is good with me.

Sorry to see that damn things with you are this bad! I know what it can feel like (sort of) and I also know, that nothing I say is going to make a difference. I even stopped my Lappish curative dances but still seremonially burn fresh Raindeer penises for your health.

Hope things are going well for you, haven't seen you around in a while...
