Why we fight in Iraq

An article in today's LA Times should come as no surprise (other than the fact that it was IN the LA Times, four years after the fact).
EPA Rule Loosened After Oil Chief's Letter to Rove
. I think my favorite line in the article was this:
In 2002, a Texas oilman and longtime Republican activist, Ernest Angelo, wrote a letter to Rove complaining that an early version of the rule was causing many in the oil industry to "openly express doubt as to the merit of electing Republicans when we wind up with this type of stupidity."

Gosh, I ask myself the same thing every day. Last night I watched a program on Nova which addressed the speed of global warming. Most scientists feel that we have less than a decade to reverse the process of global warming before the effects are irreversible. Yet this administration does everything it can to pollute the atmosphere, to pollute ground water, to destroy natural habitat.

But what the hell. We're fighting in Iraq to keep Texas safe for Big Oil.

With reference to oil wealth, I have a distant cousin in Texas who said "George Bush has been good to us."

Blogging has made be better; perhaps she should start.

If we don't elect a democratic congress in November, we're going to be stuck with this kind of stupidity for a long, long time. We are destroying the planet just so a few people can be very, very wealthy. Amazing, isn't it? It is really inconceivable to me that someone's personal wealth should triumph over the health of this shared planet, but it does. It makes me want to scream.

Oh, YK, you need to disown that cousin. Blogging does make us better.

RA, it is amazing how the greedy few are destroying the planet. BTW, I'm currently reading Ishmael (finally.)

I don't even think the existing office-holding democrats can help. Many of them are truly centrists and beholden to big oil and big corps too. If they had the power to change things, they would. As it is, they are really in collusion with the republicans to a large degree. I think the only democrats worth putting into office (the only ones that can affect change) are Progressive dems. I'm learning a lot about them, and have gone to one fundraiser here in L.A.

Check out PDA (Progressive Democrats of America). They are liberal dems and should be supported. Of course, I dont' think many realistically will get into office anytime soon. But we can try!

Helen, yes. Marcy Winograd is part of the PDAs -- and I will support them. They are the hope for change.
