Thought for today

Chronic homeless population down 15%, US says. Tracked over a 12 month period, a Federal Report claims a 15% reduction in chronic homelessness.

McCain says the surge is working.

I wonder if there's a connection here.

Today's front page news story in the Chicago Tribune "Baghdad Stories" is really pushing the working surge story. It's all about how "normal" things are in Baghdad now...drinking beer on a bridge, flowers and sunshine...

BAGHDAD-Every evening at dusk, men gather on the Jadriyah Bridge spanning the Tigris River and turn it into an impromptu bar.

It's a sign of the improving times, the revival of an old habit that dates to the rule of Saddam Hussein, before the militias and extremists blew up the liquor stores and shuttered the bars as part of their effort to impose new forms of Islamic law on this once resolutely secular society."

Oh yeah..all is well in Iraq. I told ya, the war must be over!

I really need to dump that paper, it sucks.

Those numbers have gotta be cooked. I'm seeing homeless people more and more on the on/off ramps on I75. Not just hitchhikers, but homeless.

Reminds me of when the last Bush and Reagan were in office.

Mary Ellen, //BAGHDAD-Every evening at dusk, men gather on the Jadriyah Bridge spanning the Tigris River and turn it into an impromptu bar.// That's because the indoor bars have been bombed out. I was just thinking that the US Homeless Poplutation was shipped off to Iraq to man the surge.

Dcup, I also think those numbers were cooked. Or else they didn't count Santa Monica, the home of the homeless. It's just abysmal.

I think the 15% they couldn't find all moved to Portland in the last few months. They never search the Pacific NW because they're afraid they might find homeless sasquatches.. who are curently sporting the absolute latest in designer mountain gear and colorful silk scarves.

ps - diva, did you paint your avatar character? I like it a lot and have been meaning to ask.

DivaJood said...

Susan, is THAT where they've all gone? And so glad they are so well dressed. And yes, the avatar is a detail from a very large painting I did - and the image is me as a two-year-old. Which often fits my emotional state, like TA-Day, where I have been repremanded at work.

Gees, I thought you said

'15% reduction in chronic helplessness.'

Which I construed to mean that more Republicans were leaving the GOP.

Oh, and by the by, I am planning on distributing free beer and cheese in an effort to bribe voters to vote for the Jood/Nunly ticket.
If it succeeds will you double my salary?

Bradda said...

I don't buy those numbers for second! Like you said Diva, go down to Santa Monica for a half an hour and tell me homelessness is down. Maybe in gated suburban communities like the one Randal lives in! HAH

DivaJood said...

okjimm, I will definately double your salary! Bribe away.

Bradda, Randal is a movie star, so I am thrilled he is my campaign manager.

DJ, I too am convinced the numbers aren't right, but if they are true, all it means to me is that the authorities are doing a good job of sweeping them out of the "safe" public places homeless congregate. In my neck of the woods, that would be Penn Station and Grand Central Station where the cops "sweep" out the homeless the minute they lay down on the marble floors.

okjimm, please add hemp to your political swag. This way they can drink, eat, smoke and eat some more until they're all asleep. We can then cart them to the voting booths and have them punch a few chads for our gals.

That made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants...ok, I really did pee my pants. Did I ever tell you that I'm crazy about you, kiddo? Ok..have to change my underpants...

DivaJood said...

Spartacus, I like how you think (re the hemp and all that) - I hearby double your salary.

Nunly, are they HAPPY underpants?

Mary Ellen said...

Chicago doesn't just sweep away the homeless in the streets, oh no! Any homeless person who goes to an emergency room and look as if they will require the need for a hospital room, get the royal Mayor Daley treatment. They are stuck in an ambulance and then dumped in some gutter in one of the slum areas while they're still in their hospital gowns. One guy was found with the IV tube still stuck in his arm.

For some reason, I think those aren't the people who were polled recently and said that they loved the city of Chicago.

Mary Ellen said...

Diva- Well...they were happy until I peed in them, now they're kinda damp and sad underpants. But they'll be happy soon after I wash them. Jimm really needs to quit making me laugh like that, no one will want to sit next to me at the parties.

DivaJood said...

Nunly, they do that kind of dumping here in Los Angeles as well. Must be a big city kinda thing, eh? Open gowns, no socks, news at eleven. Depends on who is doing the counting, I guess.

Randal Graves said...

Hemp? You should triple his salary! If we run out of cash, we'll just raid Halliburton's stash. They'd never notice.

I trust these numbers as much as I trust the unemployment ones. Homelessness, one of America's dirty little secrets. We're like one giant Peyton Place.

ME, you wear underpants?

DivaJood said...

Randal, I suppose I should run all salaries past you before I make promises. Spartz' hemp suggestions do involve recycling, but I don't want to offend Okjimm because he's in charge of refreshments.

My favorite homeless guy is at the off-ramp from the 110 exiting onto Santa Monica Blvd. - he sits with a sign that says "I need money for beer."

Bradda said...

What did I miss? How is Randal a movie star? That then begs the question of what star list is he on? A, B, C...?

Fran said...

I always wondered, how exactly you keep track of the homeless population. I would think many are very leery of signing any forms or participating in census counts. I sure notice a whole lot more people begging at freeway off ramps. Many are Vets (or so their sign says), and the other day I saw an old grandma in a wheelchair soliciting for funds on the off ramp. It brought me to tears. WTF kind of country abandons an elderly woman like this?

Maybe teh alleged 15% reduction is because some chronic homeless people have died as a result of lack of shelter, medical care & hope?

As for McCain I posted a new graphic poster for him @ my blog.... you'll like it.

The surge is only working IF we could maintain saturation levels of troops forever.
Therefore the surge is not sustainable.
Besides McCain is insane.

susan said...

I didn't answer your second question about whether the surge is working or not but at lunchtime I read an interview with Noam Chomsky where he gives a very satisfactory answer.

ps - I'd like to see the whole painting. Yow!

PS: Sorry about your work reprimand.... but you are smiling thinking *reprimand this*.. cause you have another plan.

I sat through a review on the weekend, thinking what a f'ing waste of time.
I was marked down for saying "if there is nothing further", rather than say "is there anything else".... life is too frigging short to mince this kind of stuff. But yet the new QA requires this verbiage. So even though the agent says- thanks, that's all I need, I still have to ask- is there anything further... leaving them thinking I did not listen to them saying *we're done*. I look forward to the day I say *we're done* to them.... maybe my resignation notice should read: Nothing further.

Randal Graves said...

Hell, let's triple everyone's salary. I'll just go steal some more from Halliburton/KBR.

bradda, dude, didn't you see me in Clerks? What's wrong with you! Best impression of a convenient store employee ever.

okjimm said...

ok. ME needs bladder control.....I'm sorry bladder control is in campaign budget under 'crowd control'....I think that is Randal's job....ya know the heavy metal thingee...more experience in mosh pits &shit.

Spartz....sorry...no hemp in swag....I gotzit....I smoke it...forget this sharing stuff....I am not that nice.

Bradda....I think Randal is on the AB list...or maybe that's his blood type...if he has blood.

Wowsers...I like the way the champagne...cantcomplain...whatever is shaping up. It is good to work for class-act babes &such.

I heard that report. I'm guessing that they have redefined homelessness. That, or the 15% reduction is those who have died of hunger and lack of medical treatment. Agggghhhhh!

DivaJood said...

Bradda, Randal is a movie star - didn't you see Clerks?

Fran, your last line about sums it up. McCain is insane.

Susan, the whole painting is on a wall in my entryway. I have slides of all my paintings, which I should put onto disc, so I can put on a new blog, which would be only my artwork. Now, THAT'S an idea.

Fran, //but you are smiling thinking *reprimand this*.. cause you have another plan. // Yep. I gotcher reprimand right here.

Randal, great idea, let's triple everyone's salary, starting with you. Give yourself a raise, you earned it.

okjimm, how did you wind up getting so much younger? Are you drinking from the fountain of youth?

Agi, you're scaring me.

Raven, I think that the 15% reduction is due to death. Really.

susan said...

Did that early on with a separate blog for one piece of art done 15-16 years ago called baby days.

Susan, I just googled Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter and found that there is such a device, which is for sale, which means I can convert my entire portfolio to jpeg and make an online art site. Complete with my CV. How cool is that?

susan said...

That's very cool indeed. I bought an Epson Perfection V500 scanner last winter that has that ability.. at least I think it's the same thing. My problem is having very little patience for anything technical and I failed to print one slide or negative. What I use it for is scanning the pictures I draw. I wish you much success and really look forward to seeing your paintings. I have a feeling your work is very, very good.

Thanks for coming by to see the story and I do hope you're feeling better. Friends are hard to make and even harder to lose.
